Voldemort as a Character:

Tom Marvolo Riddle and his later counterpart Lord Voldemort both exhibit strong tendencies towards Antisocial Personality Disorder. In plain English, he doesn't have a conscience, a sense of right or wrong controlling his actions, or shame or guilt for any wrongdoings he may commit against others. This does not mean that he has weak social skills, in fact, the opposite is the case. People with this disorder have a charming attitude and behavior towards others, giving them an ability to defraud and gain leadership positions. The most recent volume of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders defines symptoms of Antisocial Personality thusly:

There is a pervasive pattern of disregard for and violation of the rights of others occurring since age 18 years, as indicated by three (or more) of the following:

  • Failure to conform to social norms with respect to lawful behaviors as indicated by repeatedly performing acts that are grounds for arrest
  • Deceitfulness, as indicated by repeated lying, use of aliases, or conning others for personal profit or pleasure
Impulsivity or failure to plan ahead
  • Irritability and aggressiveness, as indicated by repeated physical fights or assaults
  • Reckless disregard for safety of self or others
  • Consistent irresponsibility, as indicated by repeated failure to sustain consistent work behavior or honor financial obligations

Lack of remorse, as indicated by being indifferent to or rationalizing having hurt, mistreated, or stolen from another

So what does this mean in terms of Voldemort as a person? He is far from a misunderstood and sensitive man. Through his charismatic exterior, few feelings are present and any harm he causes, from the branding of his Death Eaters' arms to the murder of a child (as he attempted to do with Harry), would be of little consequence to him.

There is nothing amendable about him, for while one may be able to convey right and wrong to a person, one cannot make them feel it. He will be malicious and evil until the day he dies. Voldemort does not apologize or answer to anyone, and if he had a spouse or children, nothing would prevent him from doing harm to them should it be sufficiently to his own benefit. Any romantic relationship he might develop would end in abuse and violence and likely not last for an extended period of time. It is also likely that he is completely unafraid of nearly everything in existence, save a few very select things. He fears Dumbledore, Harry, and his own death.

Often writers attempt to romanticize or idealize the character of Voldemort, but one could sooner write a romance novel involving Adolf Hitler or dangerous cult leaders. Often writers will also portray him as the stern father of a daughter, yet Voldemort has clearly shown no affinity for the upkeep of a family. After murdering his father and grandparents, he traveled the world and gathered a following of Death Eaters whom he frequently tortures to keep in strict obedience and a state of terror. He has in fact never shown any sign of a loving, caring, or fatherly nature: he almost mocks his role as "patron" to the Death Eaters, apparent in Goblet of Fire. In fact, the only creature Voldemort has never shown a natural desire to harm are snakes, though he admits that while he was without physical form that "I sometimes inhabited animals- snakes, of course, being my preference- but I was little better off inside them than as pure spirit, for their bodies were ill adapted to perform magic... and my possession of them shortened their lives; none of them lasted long..." which indicates that it was of little consequence to shorten the life of an animal he apparently held dear. So there is seemingly nothing that Voldemort cares much for aside from himself and his own safety, an ascent to power, and the destruction of his enemies.

Other Information:

Skills: As a student at Hogwarts he was described by Dumbledore as being "Brilliant. Of course, he was probably the most brilliant student Hogwarts has ever seen." Aside from his rather strong magical prowess, he also is a Parselmouth, giving him an ability to converse with snakes.

Speech Patterns: Voldemort uses correct and proper English. He has never once used any slang term from any period of any country or region, and likely would never do so unless it was accompanied with a strong sense of sarcasm.

House: Slytherin. During his stay at Hogwarts he was Prefect, Head Boy, and received a Medal for Magical Merit.

Living Arrangement: He lived in a Muggle orphanage until the age of around seventeen. From there, he "traveled far wide," immersing himself in the Dark Arts and no place of residence is known. After his defeat at the hands of an infant Harry Potter, he was known to live in the forests of Albania. His location at the end of the most recent novel in the series remains unknown.
